Running QuickBooks When Intuit's Servers Go Down
In June of 2010, some of Intuit's servers went down. QuickBooks customers who used features that required
contact with an Intuit server couldn't use those features and therefore lost the ability to conduct business
normally (or at all). The problem lasted several days, with an additional (but shorter) outage a few days
later.
Many of us who write about QuickBooks (books, articles, newsletters, blogs, etc.) received a great many
e-mail messages from users, asking us what to do. Some of the users didn't understand when we told them that a
problem with a server on the Internet can't be fixed from your computer. Many users don't understand Internet
-based computing.
Two of us (Charlie Russell and Kathy Ivens) have written an article to help users understand the way
Internet servers work (including interaction with your QuickBooks software). We also offer some hints and
workarounds for continuing to use your QuickBooks desktop software when Intuit's servers aren't available.
Charlie Russell is a Certified Advanced ProAdvisor, author of the
Practical QuickBooks blog and the developer of a number of QuickBooks addon products .
Kathy Ivens is the author of many books on Quickbooks and
is a Senior Contributing Editor for Windows IT Pro magazine.
