Hyperthreading Processors and QuickBooks

Some readers wrote to us to say that their IT consultants told them that the reduced performance levels they were experiencing in QuickBooks were due to problems with processors that were using hyperthreading. Some readers asked what that meant, and others asked what they should do about it. We're providing an article to explain hyperthreading, and it's intended only to provide information; we do NOT recommend you act on this information. Making changes in the way a processor works is extremely dangerous if you're not an expert. (One issue you CAN do something about to improve performance is to defragment the drive on which the company file exists if your company file has a lot of fragments. To see the number of fragments, with your company file open in QuickBooks press F2 and look at the number next to the listing "DB File Fragments". We defragment our drive if the number is larger than 6.)
